We have been greatly blessed of late in Győr. We see so much growth in the Sunday worship service and across other areas of ministry. On May 13th we were honoured to be a part of the 5 churches festival in Győr. We had a good attendance with several new people with whom we hope to reconnect with over the next few weeks. Our worship team consists of an American, a Brazilian and a Hungarian and with music in three languages we were touched by their Spirit led worship.
Please pray for us as we reach out to our local community. We desire to be a worshipping community, bringing the hope and truth of the Gospel to a lost people. We regularly have Adult Bible study, MOPS (mothers of pre-schoolers), Comfort Zone for high schoolers (a fun, Bible study group), University group and a ladies coffee morning. We also offer counselling and provide clothing and food for the needy. If you want to find out more about our ministry or would like to help in some way then please do use the contact form to reach me.
Recently we have been praying and hoping that the Lord would send some others to join us in ministry in Gyor. As ministry grows and changes we need help and are simply unable to do more. We have some great local people who help with various different ministries, but we really could do with a missionary/missionary couple or missionary family to partner with us. Could that be you? Or perhaps you know someone who may be interested? Here is a list of areas that we need help in:
- Expanding ministry to orphans (we have a desire to see this work grow)
- Leading Bible studies (we have two weekly)
- Helping with worship and/or preaching
- Starting an English language club
- Helping with ladies coffee morning or starting a group for men
- Pastoral care
- Hosting visitors and teams
- Whatever else the Lord puts on your heart!
If you might be interested, please contact me via the contact form. Looking forward to hearing from you!
We had the pleasure of leading an English language carol service in Győr this afternoon. Although the attendance was smaller than we hoped (we were 26 in total), we were delighted to be with those who turned up and it was a great blessing to also welcome people via the internet as we live streamed the service on Facebook. People from Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Japan, Romania, the USA,and the UK were among some of the countries who joined us this way. We also had our good friends and colleagues Ildikó and Julia join us in person from Budapest. Thank you ladies for making the trip from Budapest to be with us!
We sang a number of traditional Christmas hymns such as ‘Silent Night’ and ‘O come all ye faithful’. We particularly enjoyed a solo of ‘Go tell it on the mountain’ by our friend and missionary colleague Sarah Berta-Somogyi. Sarah is a missionary with the Lutheran church and it is through her hard work and contacts that we are able to use the Lutheran church facilities for free. Thank you Sarah!
Many others helped of course. Thanks to András, Gwen, Kathy, Yoli, Katica, Attila, Zsolti and Zsuzsi!
Over the past 18 months, Rex and Linda Rinne, in partnership with our friend Sarah Berta-Somogyi (all are Lutheran missionaries) have been holding a monthly English language worship service in Gyõr. Sadly Rex and Linda are unable to continue but have been wonderful in handing over the service to me. This service is a blessing to people who want to learn English or improve their existing language knowledge. It also blesses a small group of people for whom English is their first language.
Yesterday evening a total of 28 people came together to worship the Lord, pray and hear a sermon. We had an excellent time of fellowship after the service! Special thanks to Sarah for organising so much!!! Please pray for Sarah. She is a mum of three young children, runs a wonderful youth group called ‘comfort zone’ for teens and administrative work for the English service!
Our next service is October 9th and you are very welcome to join us!
We are thankful to the Lord for the wonderful strides we are making in the orphanage. More and more kids are joining us for games, English lessons and sports every week! As they join us we begin to talk about their hopes and fears, dreams for the future and develop relationships that we pray will last into eternity!!!
Until recently we had really only connected well with the younger kids but now the Lord has opened up the hearts of the older teenagers and we are seeing them join us more and more in activities.
Very soon, both ‘L’ and ‘K’ turn 18. Please pray that we can continue to strengthen our relationship with them both as they have to leave the orphanage because of turning 18.
Our plans for a five day camp at the orphanage with a team from the Northgate Free Methodist Church continue to move forward and we look forward to hosting the team in July. Please do pray for this team of seven people as they come to serve in Hungary!
Today Zsuzsi and I served in Budapest. I preached on David, using 2 Samuel 9 and 11 and Zsuzsi was my translator.
I have been serving every second week in Budapest by teaching English at a family help centre and I had invited the whole class to come hear me preach. I was delighted when several of the group turned up! Please pray that the Holy Spirit would work in their hearts.
For Zsuzsi it was her third time translating this week as she also translated for an American Lutheran pastor Monday (in front of 400 people) and at Friday night youth group. Please pray for her as she prepares for exams in n May and University studies from September.
2016 is shaping up to be a great year! We have so much planned already and are excited about what the Lord has planned for us this coming year. We want to share a few of our planned trips and ministry events with you and ask you to partner with us in prayer for this year.
In January we hope to be in Denmark for a few days as we celebrate the wedding of a wonderful Christian young couple. I was very honoured that they asked me to do a pre-wedding blessing for them over the Christmas period. Please pray for Erin and Jonathan as they prepare for married life together!
In March I hope to visit with Free Methodist church leaders in Belgium and France and serve them by helping to further equip these men and women of God and hopefully be an encouragement to them also.
Come the Summer we hope to have a team of eight people join us from America who will serve by helping run a five day evangelistic camp at the orphanage we serve in on a weekly basis. In June I hope to travel to Ukraine to help equip church leaders there and God willing we will travel to Ireland in August for a few weeks to talk at churches and have a vacation.
We will also continue with our Bible study group and weekly ministry at a local orphanage in Győr. Kati and I will also continue our twice monthly trips to Budapest (she will continue teach English to social workers and I will teach English at a family help center for a few weeks). We also hope to continue our work supporting and helping the needy of Győr and we are actively trying to gain access to a local center for the homeless. Kati has already made good contact with them and we believe the Lord is opening this door before us.
We are grateful for your prayers and support and are thankful that we can call you our partners in ministry! We pray that you are all blessed in 2016!
Twice a month as part of her ministry, Kati is teaching English to social workers in Budapest. These social workers are helping to mediate in difficult family situations, work with refugees, help the needy etc.
By helping them with their English language skills Kati is indirectly helping the refugees in Hungary at the moment.
Please pray that she would have an opportunity to witness to them about the love of Christ.
It has been several years since I last had to really study (2009 actually for ordination) and I had forgotten how very exhausting study can be.
For the last two weeks I have been in Budapest on a CELTA intensive course. This is a course to train as a teacher of English as a foreign language. Although I already have a similar qualification (TEFL), I feel I need another qualification to help me get a new job (you may remember that my position at the university finished recently).
My days typically start at 06.30, school is 0900 to 1700 and then study, lesson plans and assignments till 0100.
I have very little energy at the moment but I am grateful to friends in Budapest for feeding me at the weekend! I was privileged to preach yesterday in Budapest and I have been enjoying teaching our church leaders English.
Please pray for me as I study, write and teach. Also please pray for my four girls at home as they have extra to do without me to help .
Service comes in many forms. For me over the coming weeks it will include helping two Christian leaders improve their English language skills.
Péter and Ildikó are amazing people who love the Lord and desire to serve Him. Both have undergone significant biblical and practical studies and are currently serving in Budapest.
As I am in Budapest for a month to study I wanted to find a way to help our church here. Helping these two leaders improve their English means they can witness for the Lord to English speakers and be more effective in raising support for their work from English speaking countries. Please pray for Péter and Ildikó as they improve their English and serve Christ.
